SLAP program in Union County, NJ has been reinstated!

As some of you reading this blog may already know the Sheriff Labor Assistance Program (SLAP) in Union County New Jersey was abolished. However, abolishing the program caused significant controversy within the county because the Union County Correctional facility was unable to accommodate all the new inmates placed into the jail system for traffic violations. As  a result, the  Slap program was reinstated in Union County, NJ.

A person sentenced to a term of imprisonment for a traffic offense or disorderly persons offense in Union County, NJ now has the option of serving his/her jail sentence in Slap. In essence, that person will not have to spend his/her time in a jail cell instead he/she will perform some form community service through SLAP. However, that option of serving SLAP in lieu of a term of incarceration must be recommend by the prosecutor. Thus, a defendant must show or argue mitigating circumstances surrounding his/her new jersey traffic violation.
