Make a Plan
Obviously, the plan in football is to make the goal. The quarterback aims to make it through the maze of its opponent’s defense. How is this done? There is calculated and strategic planning executed within seconds. This same preparation applies to driving as follows:
- Listen to weather reports. If the State has declared a state of emergency, it is generally with good cause. Know road condition before you venture out with your vehicle.

- Don’t get boxed in. Are you following the car in front of you so closely that you have no means of escaping if another vehicle comes from behind? Keep your distance.
- Use your mirrors. No, we don’t mean checking the mirror placed above your visor to make sure nothing is stuck in your teeth. Your side mirrors and rear view mirror play important roles in your safety.
A Strong Defense
Let’s go back to our upcoming football weekend. It is one thing for your favorite team to make touchdowns. However, it they have not prevented the other side from scoring, they will not come out as champions. How can defensive driving techniques work in your favor? Here are some important tips:
- Do not make assumptions about the other vehicle operator. You know the old adage associated with assumptions. The other driver may be driving under the influence or busy talking on their handheld device.
- Keep your speed in check. No, speed limits are not posted to gain government revenue. They are designed to keep the roadways safe.
- Wear your seatbelt. If you are involved in a car crash, a seatbelt’s restraint may lessen your chance of serious injury. At the very least, it should stop you from being expelled from the vehicle.
- Avoid distractions. A strong defense requires your complete attention. A team can’t stop a goal if its members are too busy chatting with one another. How can you expect to avoid an accident if you do not see it coming towards you?
