Are NJ red light camera’s properly calibrated?

The time periods between a green light to an amber light then to a red light have to be properly calibrated according to New Jersey Department of Transportation standards (as determined by the NJ legislature). The time intervals vary depending on the speed limit of the respective roadways. For example, if the speed limit increases so does the time interval between respective light changes.

Recently, the Star ledger released an article indicating that, “NJDOT suspends issuance of violations at 63 intersections where red light cameras are used to enforce the law
21 towns in the pilot program ordered to re-certify timing of yellow lights.”

According to the article, “If the analysis shows that the duration of a yellow light
meets the minimum duration as required by the legislation, municipalities
will be permitted to issue violation notices for violations that occur
during the suspension period, and continue issuing violation notices.”

“The violation suspension and signal re-certification directives affect all
cameras installed at intersections in the following 19 municipalities:
Newark, Linden, Wayne, Palisades Park, Union Township, Springfield (Union
County), Roselle Park, Rahway, Englewood Cliffs, Pohatcong, Piscataway,
Edison, East Windsor, Lawrence, Cherry Hill, Stratford, Monroe, Brick and
Glassboro.”

If you been issued a summons in one of the areas that are “suspended” you should verify if the red light ticket should be dismissed as a result of the above suspension. If you have questions give Dan T. Matrafajlo a call for a free office consultation.
