What Do You Know about Union Municipal Court?

For our clients in the Union County area, we think it is important to know as much as possible about the local courts. We’ve already provided you with information about the Elizabeth Municipal Court. As the Township of Union borders on Elizabeth, we thought it would be helpful to learn about the Union Municipal Court.Union Municipal Court

Always check your summons to make sure you are headed to the right court. Unfortunately, people can make the mistake of showing up at Union County Courthouse, when they needed to be at the Township’s municipal court. If you’ve received a ticket, the address is on the back of it. Union County Municipal Court is located at 981 Caldwell Avenue in Union. It’s easy to reach from Route 22 or Morris Avenue.

Pat Nasta serves as the Court Administrator. Although the violations window is open on most weekdays from 8 am until 3 pm, the court has a specified schedule. You should receive a notification of your court date. With the exception of Fridays, court is in session on all weekdays at 9 am. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, there are evening sessions at 6 pm.

Traffic Offenses

Like all municipal courts, the Union Municipal Court hears cases involving traffic violations. However, these tickets are not just related to local streets. For example, drivers charged with speeding through the tollbooths in Union may find themselves before one of the town’s three municipal judges. For the record, Jonathan H. Rosenbluth serves as the Township’s Chief Municipal Judge.
The Garden State Parkway isn’t the only major highway that passes through Union. If you get a ticket on Route 78 or Route 22, you could also find yourself in the Township court. And, if you’re accused of drunk driving as a motor vehicle offense in Union, you’ll also go to the local court.

Other Municipal Court Cases

Municipal court cases do not just involve parking tickets and traffic violations. Not with standing, according to information provided by the judiciary website, local courts only handle some cases within their community. This includes municipal ordinance offenses, such as noise complaints. Simple assault cases and harassment claims are both heard by the municipal court judge.

The Union Municipal Court may assign certain cases to community dispute mediation. You are not obligated to accept the outcome of mediation and may want to speak with an experienced municipal court attorney regarding your concerns.
