First off, most people recognize that the term CDL is actually short for commercial driver’s license. According to the State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Division, CDL licenses are broken down as follows:
- Class A licenses include the following classifications:
Tractor trailers
Truck and trailer combination whose gross combined weight rating (GCWR) is at least 26,001 or more pounds, provided that the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds
Any vehicle in B, C or D categories, if you have qualified for the proper extra endorsements - Class B licenses are required for the following types of operation:
- Any vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds
- A vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds towing a trailer with a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds
- A bus with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including driver)
Vehicles in Class C and D categories – provided you have qualified for the proper extra endorsements
Class C qualifications are necessary for: - Any vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds used to transport hazardous material (with mandatory placard)
- Any bus designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver) and with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds
- School vehicles designed for 15 passengers or less (including the driver)
- Any bus or vehicle used for hire and designed to transport eight to 15 passengers (including the driver)
Federal Rules Also Apply to CDL Licenses
There are many federal rules that apply to those who maintain CDL licenses. Let’s provide you with some examples. The United States Department of Transportation’s Commercial Driver’s License Program is involved in safety requirements for CDL drivers. More specifically, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the government agency that works to prevent injuries and fatalities regarding commercial vehicles. - Number of consecutive hours CDL operators may drive
- Testing and requirements for commercial vehicle drivers
- Controlled substance and alcohol testing
- Inspection, repair and maintenance of vehicles
How Does Someone Qualify for a CDL License in NJ?
In order to qualify for a CDL license in New Jersey, there are some basic requirements. They start with the basic procurement of a regular driver’s license. In addition, all CDL drivers must be at least 18 years old. They must have 20/40 vision in each eye (with or without glasses). Lastly, there is a requirement to submit a valid medical examiner’s certificate. The document must come from a certified medical examiner and state that the applicant is physically fit.
