What is an Ignition Interlock Device?
An ignition interlock device is a device that is connected to the ignition system in your car, requiring you to submit a breath sample prior to starting your car. If the device detects an alcohol content of 0.05 or greater, the device will prevent your car from starting.
Even when the IID allows your car to start, it will alert you to submit random breath samples while driving. These mandatory “rolling re-tests” are designed to make sure you do not drink while operating your vehicle.
Installing an Ignition Interlock Device
If you are convicted of a DUI and the court orders the installation of an IID, you must obtain the device from a state certified service provider. If you fail to install the court ordered IID, the court may extend the requirement for an additional year.
The duration of an IID installation generally depends on your prior DUI convictions and your blood alcohol content (BAC) at the time of your arrest. Below is a summary:
- First-time DUI offense: the device is required for a period of 6 months to one year. If your BAC was 0.10 or higher, the period may increase to one to three years.
- Second-time DUI offense: the device is required for two years.
- Third-time DUI offense: the device is required for 10 years.
