How to Avoid A New Jersey DWI Conviction

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in car accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers. In other words, there is one alcohol-related car accident death every 51 minutes. Additionally, the annual cost of such accidents soars at an alarming $59 billion. An-Accident-Waiting-To-Happen

In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents that involved alcohol-impaired motorists, accounting for almost one-third of all traffic accident deaths nationwide. Even more alarming is that more than half of young children under the age of 14 who died in car accidents were riding in the vehicle with the alcohol-impaired driver.

These numbers and statistics may be shocking, but thankfully, there are effective measures that can help reduce or even prevent alcohol related motor vehicle injuries and deaths.

10 Ways to Avoid a New Jersey Drunk Driving Conviction

Below are ten effective measures that can help you avoid or prevent a drunk driving conviction under New Jersey laws:

  1. Avoid getting behind the wheel of any type of vehicle if you have consumed any considerable amount of alcoholic beverages, regardless of whether you “feel” drunk. Any means of transportation can result in a DWI conviction.
  2. Do not assume that you cannot be arrested for a DWI conviction on private property.
  3. Avoid being behind the wheel, even if your car is in the process of getting towed.
  4. If you are “sleeping off” the alcohol by resting in your car, do so in the back seat with the ignition off and the keys in your pocket. It is best to park the car off the roadway.
  5. Refrain from consuming any amount of alcohol if you are taking prescribed medication because the possibility of synergism or some other adverse effect from the combination can be unexpected.
  6. If you plan on drinking throughout the night, start by drinking about 32 ounces of water before any alcohol consumption. You should then alternate a glass of water between each alcoholic drink you consume.
  7. Stop consuming any alcoholic beverages at least 1.5 hours before considering getting behind the wheel.
  8. Give yourself, or have a sober friend, administer field sobriety tests to gauge your sobriety level.
  9. If you are stopped a DWI checkpoint, have your driver’s license and other documents ready in your hand and offer them to the officer immediately. Do not admit to having consumed any alcohol.
  10. Obey all traffic signals.
