Distracted Driving: A Serious Issue
According to New Jersey State Police reports, a great number of fatalities involving motor vehicle accidents occurred as a result of distracted driving. This makes distracted driving a serious issue and one that local communities are attempting to combat with education and enforcement.
Recently, several Union County towns were provided with grants targeted against distracted driving. The City of Linden’s efforts were publicized in a recent article that appeared on nj.com. They handed out over a 100 tickets for distracted driving in just two days of operation. This did not include a select group who were provided with warnings and educational pamphlets.
What is Considered Distracted Driving?
Obviously, anything that diverts a driver’s attention from the roadway is considered a distraction. The United States government has their own website to address this issue. They categorize distracted driving as an epidemic. Most tickets issued for distracted driving are related to people talking and/or texting on hand held devices.
The New Jersey State Legislature is seeking to expand the definition of distracted driving. Last year, the Assembly introduced a bill that would officially add other offenses under the distracted driving window. These would include:
- Putting on makeup while driving
- Reading a newspaper or book while actively behind the wheel
- Taking care of a pet
- Shaving while driving
- Smoking
- Eating
