Can GPS Technology Really Help with Police Chases?
You might have wondered about global positioning systems (GPS) and their correlation to police work. As we continue our series on Technology and Police Stops, we will review the impact of GPS Technology and motor vehicles.
Some cars come equipped with built-in GPS units. Others use the maps feature on their smart phone. Some use portable devices that can be conveniently moved from vehicle to vehicle. By seemingly scientific magic, they use satellite positioning earmark geographic locations. Amazing, isn’t it?
What follows next may astound you even more. Even if a driver isn’t making use of GPS technology, it can still work against them. How you say? The police may decide to tag your vehicle, especially if you are involved in a police chase. You’ll never even realize it!
Some NJ Police Use GPS Technology in Police Chases
Not all New Jersey law enforcement officials are making use of GPS technology to tag fleeing cars. Last year, a news article highlighted the details of Star Chase, the developers of Pursuit Management technology. Two Somerset County police departments were the first to take advantage of the new system.
Imagine this scenario. We’ve talked about attempts to elude the police. It could be that someone is traveling in a stolen car. Or, concerned about being stopped for a DWI offense. They may mistakenly think the best option is to run and hide.
Law enforcement officials are bound by certain rules when it comes to police chases. Obviously, safety is one of them. But, how can they keep track of cars that are getting away from them?
Technology strikes again. Some police cars are equipped with compressed-air launchers. The responding officer is trained to use a laser to target the vehicle on the run. Surprise. Surprise. The car is now tagged with a GPS device. The suspects may never realize that the police now have the ability to track their car.
The result is somewhat obvious. The tracking device will lead to the fleeing vehicle. The GPS technology updates regularly. Apprehension is made easier.
Again, like all technological advances, the system isn’t perfect. It’s still necessary to prove that a crime has been committed. And, to determine exactly who should be charged with one.
