Common Ways Your Driver’s License May Be Suspended in New Jersey
Your New Jersey driver’s license can be suspended for various reasons. We have compiled a list of the 5 most common ways your driving privileges may be suspended in New Jersey.
1. Suspended: Due to Excessive Traffic Violations and Points
If you receive too many traffic violations, including speeding tickets, your driving privileges may be suspended by either the Municipal Court judge or by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). If you get a notice in the mail from the MVC that your New Jersey driver’s license is scheduled to be suspended, it will also include the steps you can take to avoid a suspension.
If you decide to fight the MVC’s decision, you will need to provide them with written notice requesting a hearing. The hearing will take place at an MVC regional center. Our New Jersey speeding ticket attorneys can help you prepare for this hearing.
2. Suspended: Not Appearing in Court
Your license may also be suspended if you fail to appear in Municipal Court for any reason. In most situations, the court that you failed to appear in will issue a warrant for your arrest. Once you appear in court, the warrant may be lifted and you may also request the court to lift the suspension of your New Jersey driving privileges.
3. Suspended: Unpaid Parking Violations
You may also find your driving privileges suspended if you fail to pay your parking tickets. In order to lift this type of suspension, you will need to appear in court, contest the parking ticket and have the court dismiss the suspension. Our New Jersey ticket attorneys can help you successfully fight your tickets in court.
4. Suspended: Not Having Automobile Insurance
State law requires you to have some type of auto insurance. If you are found to be driving without proof of insurance, your driver’s license will be suspended and you may incur additional fines.
