When you consume alcoholic drinks, your blood alcohol content (BAC) changes based on the absorption of the alcohol in your system. There are various factors that affect the rate of this absorption, including rate of consumption of alcohol, strength of the alcohol you consumed, and whether you were smoking. Your New Jersey DUI Lawyer will look at these different factors in analyzing your DUI case.
Rate of Consumption of Alcohol
How fast you consume alcohol may seriously affect your BAC. For example, for most individuals, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol in a short period of time may cause the pyloric valve in their stomach to seize and thus delay the absorption of alcohol. However, if the same individual consumes alcoholic beverages over an extended period of time, the liver will have a better chance to get rid of the alcohol in their system, resulting in a lower BAC.
Type of Alcoholic Beverage Consumed
Another big factor that affects your BAC is the type of alcoholic beverage you consumed. As your New Jersey DUI lawyer may warn you, drinks with high alcohol content, such as a straight shot of tequila, may cause your pyloric valve to seize, which will postpone the absorption of alcohol in your system for hours. However, drinks that are less concentrated may absorb at a faster rate, resulting in a significantly lower BAC.
Smoking While Drinking
Smoking while consuming alcoholic beverages may also impact your BAC. Smoking generally delays or slows your bowel movement, which in turn will delay the maximum absorption of the alcohol in your system.
Although you don’t have to give up social drinking in order to avoid a DUI, we do recommend that you take these factors into consideration the next time you are at a social function.
