About New Jersey Municipal Courts
In most cases, if you experience the New Jersey legal system as any party to a case, you will most likely be in a Municipal Court. New Jersey Municipal Courts have jurisdiction over the most common types of cases, including minor criminal offenses (such as simple assault and writing faulty checks), violations of municipal ordinances (such as health and building code violations), and moving violation tickets. In certain situations, if a more serious criminal case is initially filed in a Municipal Court, it will eventually be referred to a County Superior Court.
